colourful food
It was about 6:00 in the evening. Monte was out at a meeting. The children had been fed and bathed and there was still time before bed, so they asked if we could go outside. The weather was beautiful and mild. I thought it was a great idea.
We let the chickens out of their coop so they could have a bit of a wander and peck around in the bed of parsley – which has gone to seed. The dogs trotted around with us. We checked on the sheep and the cows and the rabbits. We looked at the vegetables and talked about the dry dry summer we have had, and how we can’t water the garden because we are on rainwater and there just isn’t enough for watering plants after we use it and the animals drink it.
We discovered some ripened vegetables: (pumpkin, cucumbers, tomatoes and zucchinis), so the children picked them. We gathered them in a pile and did some counting as well as talking about colours and vegetables in general – and which ones we liked the most.
“one two three four five six nine six nine:” counting the vegetables
After all that, we went over to the cows and gave them some pellets. Georgie had a go of giving Bella a pat; she also had a look and feel of bella’s udder, which she thought was interesting and weird and kind of cool.
By the time we had done all that, it was time for bed, so inside we went, for stories, teeth brushing and sleep time! I love the time hanging out with my trio of happiness, but I love that moment when they are all in bed and the house is quiet and I can sit in quiet with my cup of tea and my crochet…
