Recently I was walking around the property, when I heard the strange yet familiar sound of a chicken laying an egg. At first I wondered what all the fuss was about, and then I remembered. Eggs. They carry on a bit when they are laying, don’t they!
Well, there you have it. One of our girls is laying every day. One egg a day is about all we need, because the only time we use eggs, generally, is in baking. Occasionally we might eat eggs for a meal, but most eggs go into cakes etc. I am thinking, however, that a surplus of eggs might mean real custard and pavlovas!
We have four chickens: two roosters and two hens. One of the roosters might be eaten one day soon and we will eventually add more hens to the flock.
This small step is one step closer to our original goal of growing most of our own food. It is a good feeling.
