For a while now, Georgia has been asking me to teach her how to crochet. She can knit and she is getting better at sewing, so crochet is the next thing she wants to do.
What better way to spend a wintry Sunday morning than sitting, snuggling up in the cosy bed with my gorgeous girl and teaching her how to crochet? We chatted a lot; it was nice to spend the time with just her. She got frustrated with the hooking at times but she actually picked it up very quickly.
The thing with crochet is that if you can master the chain stitch, you’ll find the rest of the stitches really easy. I showed Georgia how to make a chain. Instead of launching her into it, we took a few steps towards her being able to make the stitch on her own.
After showing her and breaking the stitch down into its different stages, I gave her the hook. Whilst she manipulated the hook, I held the chain and the yarn in my hand, so all she had to do was hook.
Once she had mastered the hook part, I got her to hold the yarn end as well as the hook. I held the chain end so she got a feel for coordinating both hands as she made the chain.
I had imagined that after a while of her hooking this way, I would take away the hand that was holding the chain and tell her to take the chain as well. However, what actually happened was that she took the chain on her own accord after a while. I exclaimed: ‘Hang on. Look! You’re crocheting all on your own!’ She squealed a little squeal of delight.
Before we knew it, she was crocheting on her own!
I’m blessed with a really artistic daughter who thrives on expressing herself creatively and spending time with me. She’s hoping to crochet a scarf for her Monster High dolls.
hehehe love that wit! Nicole is still making chains. Long chains. VERY long. 3m. A certain adult in the house is turning 40 next week (hint – it’s not me) and Nicole thinks crochet chain decorations would be splendid. I agree. When Nicole is all chained-out I’ll teach her the double. :)
Hey Andrew – how about you guys come to Tassie and we’ll all crochet and have a big yarn!
That’s fantastic, Kate! Thanks so much for sharing. Will you show her the DC stitch next? xox
Could one of you please come over and teach Jules to crochet? lol
I was reading your blog about crochet yesterday, and thinking to myself hmmm I wonder if Nicole would like to learn? Then a couple of hours later, she approached me as I was continuing a crochet hat (my latest fad) and said “mum, can you teach me how to crochet?” HOW ABOUT THAT. So, using your wisdom as a guide, I taught her how to do the chain stitch. She got it after a few tries, and now she has 50cm of chain and still going. When she gets sick of doing that I’ll teach her how to put another stitch into the chain…..Thanks for the inspiration, Bec!
