Where we live

We live on a hill, overlooking the valley that is Geeveston and beyond. It is very beautiful. In fact, it was this view that sold the property to us, despite the steep driveway.

We’ve been here five years now. It has taken nearly that long for me to adjust to being more isolated from the rest of the world. There have been some things that I have had to change. For example, I don’t go on coffee dates or shopping dates with friends as much; instead I do a lot of shopping online (which saves time and money, which is great for this busy mummy!) and we often catch up with friends at our houses or in parks, after all, it is more pleasant for the children anyway.

In the city I used to walk a lot more. I would walk to the shop. I used to ride my bike to work! When I was a uni student I used to walk to my bus stop, which was 4km away from my house. Here, it’s not that easy to walk to the shops. It would take hours! I couldn’t ride my bike to work either – I work 25km or so away from our house.

Because of where we are, if I want to go for a walk or a run, that is all I do. Without another motive, I put on the sneakers that I now share with my daughter and set off down the hill that is our 500m driveway and go for a run. I did such a run yesterday, and it seems it is becoming my Saturday morning ritual. Whenever I am pumping the pavement (dirt road) that is our street, I am in awe of the beauty in which we live. No concrete! Trees as far as the eye can see! Wallabies hopping across the road! Birds tweeting in the treetops! The sound of a running creek along the road for the length of my journey…

I like running with Jac. He stays right beside me for the whole time, never running off chasing wallabies. D’Artagnan is getting a bit too old (nearly 13) to run with us and she has a sore leg so she didn’t come yesterday, which was sad. But Naigee the crazy cat followed me down the hill:

Jac is thinking: ‘what the?’

I love it here. I can’t believe how beautiful it is. I can’t believe how lucky we are. I can’t get over how good life is, and how great our friends are, and how exceptionally good it feels to be working towards living our dream.
