A friend of ours was just telling us about a pastor who once said that ‘as Christians, we don’t need to worry about the environment because everything is preordained.’ Firstly, that pastor should lose his job, saying crap things like that, and secondly, as Christians, we must worry about and care for our environment.
I’m not a ‘Bible’ basher and I don’t try to convert everybody I meet. That is not my gift. I will, however, confidently speak my Christian mind when appropriate. Now, I was given a cue to express something that I believe imperative for the Church. As Christians, we must care for our environment. According to the Bible, which I believe is God’s word, people were placed on this planet and told to look after it. To me, this means that asstewards of our world and with God’s wish us to look after our environment, we need to do whatever we can to save the creation that He made. I think God detests McDonalds and other similar junk foodchains. It’s not just for the environment though; there are many reasons (not going into that today!).
If you made something for somebody, and they deliberately trashed it, even when they knew what to do to keep it in good order, how would you feel? Pretty peeved!
And I don’t think that prayer alone will save the world. Yes, God wants us to talk to him in prayer, but if that’s all we needed to do we wouldn’t have arms and legs! We need to do what we can to improve and save our environment.
And then, even if you are not a Christian, and you think everything I am saying is crap, well that’s ok – you can choose what you believe. But it’s a fact that the world is suffering, and it’s a fact that you can do something to save it, and it’s a fact that you can’t ignore the facts.
