Okay. So, our Ella-belle is getting baptised in a few weeks. I want to sew her something. I bought her a dress; she needs headgear.
So I did some research on sewing headbands for babies, and didn’t really find what I wanted. This may or may not come as a surprise to you.
I rummaged through my great grandmother’s stash of lace. Vintage lace! Am I not lucky? I cut elastic to measure slightly less than Elora’s head circumference, and then some lace twice as long.
Then, using a technique to sew elastic onto pants legs or sleeve cuffs, I secured the ends of the elastic and lace together, sewing a few stitches, forwards then backwards.
This is where you start wondering why this post is called ‘sewing a garter,’ when I am sewing a headband. I chuckled too.
After securing the elastic, I held both ends of my lace/elastic taught, and sewed along with my machine until I got to the end. Not the most pleasant experience.
Then I looked at my handiwork.
‘Aw crap,’ I whispered, in my head. It’s a fricking garter. My gorgeous baby can’t wear a garter on her head for her baptism.
So I secured the two ends together. I sewed on a (vintage) blue ribbon.
Et voila. A garter: something old and something blue (if she doesn’t like it, it might be borrowed too), for my sister’s upcoming wedding.
So everybody who reads this post now knows that I could have dressed my baby in a garter (and still might; determined as I am to make her headband!).
Just trying it on for size :)
